Artist Statement

I was born in Timisoara, Romania, in 1977.  I’ve studied art almost as long as I can remember, attending an art middle school and an art high school before earning my B.A. in art from the University of the West, Timisoara. After graduation I moved to the U.S. and presently work in Glens Falls, NY.
I remember as a child being very interested in portraits; I loved creating faces to go along with fictional stories. This interest remained somewhere in the background, and after college it came out stronger than ever.  Today, I’m again trying to tell a story about the people I’m painting, but this time the people are real. They include my professor and mentor in school--who taught me what it means to be an artist; a wonderful old woman I knew in Romania who smiled with all her face and who was so bright and opinionated; and a craggy-faced peasant who oh-so-briefly caught my eye as I shot photos at a village festival.  They are people who I was lucky enough to know--or strangers whose photos I was lucky enough to capture.  They all have some story to tell—whether known to me or only imagined.
