Aileen Cinquemani's Artwork

Biography
My father was born and raised in a mountainous region of Puerto Rico called Baranquitas, a place of great natural beauty and simplicity. It was a far cry from the raw South Bronx neighborhood he settled us in while my parents struggled to support and educate their four children. Puerto Rico is an Island full of mysteries and magic, and so up to today I am still drawn to the surreal and mystical world.
Many of my paternal relatives were musicians, artists, great storytellers, and singers. Some cousins were painters, an aunt or two were beauticians and teachers, and a few uncles and cousins sang and played instruments. Not to be outdone, my father could play several instruments, had a rich, mildly raspy singing voice, and could paint, sketch and carve mini sculptures. I was lucky enough to inherit the gift of art; lucky enough to understand beauty and creation. It has been a source of great expression and comfort for me, and it wasn’t until many years had gone by that I learned what “Baranquitas” meant. It is the Tahino Indian phrase “The Cradle of the Artist” and it is said that all great Puerto Rican artists derive from this town.
Am I one of these “Great Artists”? Am I a part of a spiritual legacy, guided by some magical inheritance? I’m not sure…but I am my father’s daughter and being born legally blind, having a life altered by my circumstances, and being gifted with this wondrous talent gives me some assurance that perhaps I am meant to be “Great”. My younger sister, Marissa, is also Legally Blind and touched with the artistic talent that practically gallops through my family. We share more than just a visual impairment, we share a gifted ability to see and translate the world in abstract.
I hope you enjoy my work, I may not “see” life clearly, but when it comes to art my heart and my soul see for me and I truly believe my father guides me through my work. He is gone 5 years now, yet the love and appreciation he instilled within me for the world of art remains vibrant and strong.
Thank you Daddy…
