Artist Statement

Joan Slocum, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America since 1981, is known throughout the Hudson Valley as both a respected teacher and award-winning artist. 

Her pastels and her oils have garnered numerous “Best in Show” and “Best in Pastel” honors.  Joan’s work has been exhibited at the National Arts Club in New York City and in venues throughout the United States. 

Her equestrian series has generated tremendous interest among people involved in riding, raising and showing horses and in events from Steeplechase to Dressage.  Portrait commissions have ranged from politicians to “everyman”.  Ms. Slocum has illustrated a historical book on the Shawangunk Valley and was published in “Hsigun Shih”, Chinese monthly. 

Joan has studied with internationally known artists such as Daniel Green, Aaron Shikler, Albert Handel and Joe Hing Lowe.  “… Slocum is in complete commend of her medium…”, Wayne Lempka, Poughkeepsie Journal.  Presently Ms. Slocum is instructing highly successful private classes in her studio in Wallkill, New York.
