Laurie Sargent

Biography

A natve of Portland, Maine, Laurie Sargent grew up in Maine and New York. She majored in art at Colby College and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
The major influence on her choice to become a wood sculptor occoured when she was 21 and had the good fortune to meet an inspiring, self taught wood sculptor from whom she learned the skills of using an ax, splitting a log, pinning together a five-piece sculpture, building a ferro-cement house, and seeing beauty.

Artist's Statement

When I begin carving a log I have no concious knowledge of what shapes will evolve. My one certainty is that I am searching for beauty. Success in the search depends on letting go of preconceptions and being relentlessly open to the guidance of intuition.
