Emilia Beer
Emilia Beer's Artwork

Artist Statement
Emilia Beer was born in a Transylvanian town, Braşov, Romania in 1925. She started to paint using water colors and copying the numerous glass icons in her grand mother’s home when she was 6.
She was encouraged and helped by her mother, and by a professor who was a usual summer guest in their mountain house. He suggested that she is sent to the “Belle Arte” school in Bucureşti (Bucharest-the capital), but the leading figure in her family, her grandmother objected.
She felt that artists (and army officers!) were destined to ruin their lives with parties, disreputable behavior, and end up destitute. Not a respectable future for a young lady! Emilia continued to paint on her own, without any formal training. By 10 she progressed to oil paint, flowers and landscapes. Her grandmother’s orchard and garden was a constant source of inspiration.
Painting has remained a precious activity for the rest of her life, often her way to cope with hardship or misfortune. In 1976 she immigrated to New York with her husband and son. She did not take any formal painting classes until she became a widow in her late 70’s, at a continuing education center for senior citizens.
Her work has been displayed at several local, amateur shows in Connecticut. She suffered progressive visual loss from glaucoma and underwent multiple operations to halt its progression.
