Ian McKay's Artwork

Artist Statement
I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in 1999. At that time I was busy working as an architectural illustrator and had 20/20 vision. As my condition worsened, I began a series of paintings that incorporated the actual" degeneration" of the painted surface. The subject matter for the work was 9/11 and the aftermath..Five years later, when I became legally blind, I could no longer see the results of my painting. At that point I stopped altogether.
I was now using a magnifying glass to study the architectural plans and an assistant to carry out the illustration practice. I decided to experiment with using the magnifier, working free-hand ink, to return to my Tower of Babel project that I had been working on in the 90's. I was amazed by the results. I've been able to produce 3 of these as well as hand color a previous piece. These 4 new works as well as some of the large abstracts are represented here.

You can view more work and purchase originals and limited edition prints through my website; www.IanMcKayGallery.ca
