Artist Statement
In the mid 1980’s my wife wanted to learn about power tools, so we took an adult education course at the local high school. I tried the lathe and became hooked. I was self taught until a few years later when I spent a weekend learning some techniques with a wood turner/teacher in Vermont.
I kept working at the craft and spent a weekend with David Ellsworth, a renowned wood turner, in the late 1990s learning much more about wood turning. It sometimes seems to me that the wood “told” me how it wanted to be shaped.
I was an anesthesiologist who developed macular degeneration and had to retire. Since retiring and in the face of decreasing eyesight [despite the best efforts of Dr. Beer and his associates], I have continued woodturning.
Pictured are some of my most recent bowls.
